Early Life 

His parents were Willard Scott and Jessie Jean Harris.

In 1950, Scott started working as a field producer for NBC affiliate WRC, and in that role he later rose to become an executive producer of the network’s Washington, D.C., news department. He then became general manager of the news department of NBC affiliate KGO in San Francisco.

While attending American University, Scott got involved in the civil rights movement as a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and became a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music education.

Career 

He was on the Air Force Broadcasting Board of Review and helped with many of the technical aspects on the radio program. He wrote the introduction and narration for the radio program.

For nearly three decades after he left WRC he remained in the Pittsburgh radio business, producing and hosting children’s programs for WQED TV from 1973 to 1995. During that time he was often seen on WTAE TV.

Scott became a weatherman at NBC after spending a number of years at NPR. His first forecast was seen on the NBC Today Show in 1980. His weather reports were syndicated, broadcast daily by NBC, WNBC/Channel 4 and WCBS/Channel 2, for many years.

He covered the presidential election, from New York City, in 1992. He did interviews in 1992 in California and on election night in California.

Bryant Gumbel made an internal memo criticizing The Today Show personalities. It was later leaked to the press.
