Steve grew up in Dallas, Texas. The family was a large one: his mother and her four siblings, one brother, and one step-sister lived there, while his father and his brother lived in Chicago. He attended a school in Dallas, and graduated from Notre Dame High School, in 1964.
As a teenager, he took up the job of selling guidebooks at Disneyland on weekends and summer breaks. His family couldn’t afford to send him for his education and he had to learn on his own.
