Richard Philip Lewis was born on the 29th of June, 1947, in his parents’ New York apartment in Brooklyn.
Lewis attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to study sculpting. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a BA in English in 1968.
After his first year at OSU, he joined the Israeli Defense Force, where he led a tank battalion in the Golan Heights. He left the IDF as an officer and served as a civilian in the US military.

Lewis wrote many of the ads that would come to define the “Mondale 1980” campaign and helped to turn him into a political star.
