As a child, Hugo Rafael Chavez was raised by his grandmother. He learned to read and write at the age of four. After the victory of the Movement for Socialism in 1998, Chavez began to campaign for president. His public speaking style was noted for his flamboyancy and colloquialisms.

Chavez was married twice. In his first marriage, he met the daughter of a poor, white farmer; they divorced. He married again to a poor, Spanish-speaking seamstress; they divorced.
