Early Life

He was the son of Joseph Dierdorf and Mary Ann Dierdorf.

Dierdorf is the son of John and Evelyn. His father worked much of his life for the Hoover Vacuum Company. He attended Glenwood High School in Canton.

Dierdorf was a talented football player in high school and was interested in Notre Dame Football but, in the end, there was no scholarship offer.

Career 

Dierdorf was selected by his players and was a member of the NFLPA for eight consecutive years. In 1976, he was selected as the Offensive Lineman of the Year and was selected for two consecutive years (1977-78).

While he was never the best player in the league, he was the most consistent. He played at a high level for a long time and was still one of the most consistent all-around players in the league when the Giants retired his number in 1983, a ceremony that was attended by players and coaches from both teams.

He continued to broadcast for ABC Sports, calling college football games, and joined ESPN as an analyst. He retired from ESPN on February 11, 2010.

He was honored as the recipient of the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award in 2008, “for contributions to the radio side of football through his insightful analysis, humor and outstanding leadership”.
