However, what is surprising and quite interesting is that the card he sold for $478,000 at auction in 2016, was the same card he originally purchased for $8,000 when he worked as a newsboy in 1952.
And here’s the final price tag on Wille Mays autographed card, which was consigned by Heritage Auctions to sell at their Las Vegas Sports Memorabilia Auction held in June. The card sold for a record-setting $1.2 million, making the card the most expensive sports autographed memorabilia piece ever sold at auction.
Wille Mays’ first Topps card featured his signature on the back instead of his playing number.

Babe Ruth is a popular baseball star and his name is known all over the world. Babe’s story begins in the minor leagues and continues to his success with the Red Sox.
The card has the highest known price and the most copies ever sold at the same auction, and with only ten known to exist, that makes it very rare.
7. Mickey Mantle, 1951 Bowman

The Mantle Bowman card sold at auction for over $450,000, making it the most expensive baseball card of all time.

Because of the condition of its condition, it is worth far more than if it were graded a 9. It would only be worth somewhere in the region of $20,000 – $30,000.
And I’m pretty sure that it’s the only one!
5. “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, 1909 American Caramel

This card was the most sort after card in the E90-1 Caramel set and was sold at auction in 2016 for $667,149 U.S. dollars.
White Sox owner Charles Comiskey paid Shoeless Joe Jackson $30,000 to intentionally lose the 1919 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds.
While searching the internet, I came across a PSA 8 copy of a young Wayne Gretzky rookie card. I was interested and decided to check his status.
For this card, the grading agent says that the print is “pretty sharp.” This also means that the print has some minor, but noticeable, defects.

Babe Ruth’s card was the third most expensive card ever sold at auction. It was sold by the Dallas Cowboys to a private owner in 2016 for a whopping $13 million.
It sold for a massive $717,000 at auction in 2016. But it wasn’t the only Sporting News card with the same PSD grading to be sold at such a premium.
At that time, the highest-graded copy sold for around $550,000.

The most expensive baseball card is the Honus Wagner 1909-1911 ATC T206, from 1909 to 1911.
If you were a kid in the 1920’s, you probably enjoyed playing “pick-up baseball” with your friends. This is when kids would go to the park, or to a vacant lot, and play catch or hit ground balls with a bat and a glove.
A cigarette company thought that they might be able to persuade kids to smoke their cigarettes by putting a baseball card with a model smoking inside a pack of cigarettes.
These cards were the first iteration in the style that became the norm.
The Honus Wagner card is universally considered to be the Holy Grail of baseball cards.
The reason being that Honus Wagner was the first professional baseball player to receive a baseball card, and so there were very few to begin with, and once he was pulled from production, no more cards were made for him.
